an old thing that go boom.
Guess the gun and win nothing! nerd!
Also congrats, apparently you can read.
Is in very, very nice shape overall. Some dings, but a numbers matching gun. Cleaning rod was MIA. Bore looks good if I had any idea what a good bore was supposed to look like. How much for an un-issued 60+year old gun? 270$ shipped.
I’ll post pics once I get the thing cleaned and all this crud off. The cosmoline isnt goo so much as it has solidified. Gonna be a pain in the ass to get off.

k98. Turkish? Yugo?

Mosin Nagant.
Best way to get the cosmoline off.
2 very large black trash bags and 2 newspapers
Take gun apart and separate wood and metal parts
Separate all the pages of the pares and fill the bags with 1 papers worth each
Lay the wood pats on top of the paper in one bag and the metal in the other and tie the bags shut.
Leave pieces in bags (paper side down) on the dash of your vehicle on a few sunny days. Cosmoline will heat up and be absorbed by the newspaper.
Repeat if necessary.
This technique and 880 rounds through my 91-30 and I still get a little cosmoline smell.

Yugo.

Un-issued Mosin. That’s awesome. And have fun with the cosmoline, it took me about 6 months to actually get rid of the final trace of that stuff. They are hilariously fun to shoot though.

Cosmoline: The unwanted gift that keeps on giving.
Congrats on the raifu!

Its a yugo built mauser, but yea. I shot my friend’s springfield 1903 and I had to have one.

Yup

Something like this or an old Lee Enfield or Mosin is something I wouldn’t mind having someday to take to the range!
I also wouldn’t mind having something oddball like a French MAS-36 (which I grew to like after playing countless hours of ‘Hidden and Dangerous II -Sabre Squadron’ with friends throughout my early university years)!

Either the best first gun ever or the worst. Had to get one while they could still be had for cheap.
![]() 03/06/2017 at 19:51 |

The yugo mauser pattern guns are great, still cheap, but ammo is a bitch. mosins are still cheap, just not as cheap as they used to be, I just wasn’t feeling it. Everything else has gotten so damn expensive that i just felt like I should get something before the supplies run out and they become arbitrarily expensive. These guns are cool, but no way in hell would I pay over a grand for one.

First gun eh? Interesting choice.
Be sure to drill the 4 gun handling basics into your head.
Look up Jeff Cooper.

Why are mil surp so expensive now
![]() 03/06/2017 at 20:02 |

Damn, I just associate cosmoline with Mosins. I thought it looked off, but that’s significantly cooler!

Obama.
Supplies are starting to dwindle. CMP has run out of both springfields and m1 garands, quality mosins are less common, I am pretty sure Lee Enfields have always been expensive. Good papered k98s have always been rare. Lack of availability is funneling buyers towards remaining rifles. Personally I would have rather had a 1903 but they are now over 1000$
![]() 03/06/2017 at 20:22 |

will do.
![]() 03/06/2017 at 20:24 |

Yeah these yugos might as well be brand new K98s, nearly identical. The war they were built for never happened. I am pretty stoked.

There’s a turn of the century Swedish Mauser in pretty good shape in a local pawn shop (or was), but I haven’t lost my marbles and splurged because 1920s shotguns are life.

I kept telling myself I’d pick up a sub $100 Mosin from Big 5 some day. Those days are long past and I missed the boat.
Ironically AR15 are now going sub $400.

It’s weird, I am not like this about any other antique gun, I just really wanted a bolt gun.

Congrats on joining the Mauser club. I’ve got a 1918 Kar98 AZ myself.

Gun prices are just getting silly. That would be like a model T selling for more than a brand new ferrari.
![]() 03/06/2017 at 20:45 |

CMP still has Garands. The question is do you want to pay for them?
![]() 03/06/2017 at 20:47 |

A gun is always loaded.
Never point it at anything you’re not willing to destroy.
Always be aware of what’s behind your target.
Finger outside the trigger guard until you’re ready to fire.

Arent they junk like garands that survived ww2 and korea but somehow never got refurbished? All the vids I watched showed empty shelves.

Ist inferior produkt of Yugoreich!

One I’m looking at getting has “strong pitting” on the reciever by the wood. But I’d rather get one with some issues that I could get taken care of over time rather than paying a premium or one of the M1C or M1D snipers that CMP has for sale.

For both the Iver Johnson and the Auto 5, I had a strong “Come to Butthead” reaction. Most of the time, not so much.

ww2 and korea but somehow
Funny you mention Korea and Garands...

Yay, Mauser!
![]() 03/06/2017 at 21:34 |

Mmmm, Mauser.
What I really want to get is a Swiss Vetterli. Utterly fascinating rifle. Winchester action...but turn-bolt. Black-powder, but with cartridges. 10-round capacity at a time when everybody was more or less still stuck at one. Positively space-age compared to the muzzle-loading rifles that were in vogue the same decade it came out.

Nice, my dad has a German K98K, only downside to that is it’s not numbers matching. I’ve got a Mosin M44, they’re fun to shoot.

Ah the Mauser Action. Good for everything, except winning World Wars.
(I’m a Mosin Owner)

Don’t worry too much about the 98k, from what I understand most aren’t numbers matching.

Good enough for the u.s army to rip it off :)
I debated a mosin but I just don’t like the look of them. Just couldn’t pass up a “like new” gun.
![]() 03/07/2017 at 00:50 |

It’s because it a Russian capture gun, most k98s aren’t matching.
![]() 03/07/2017 at 00:52 |

Makes it easier to enjoy rather that worrying about collector value I think.
![]() 03/07/2017 at 00:55 |

Only problem is some of the parts don’t fit together as well as they should. My mosin is numbers matching since the Russians won the war.
![]() 03/07/2017 at 09:26 |

I’mma steal that one.
![]() 03/07/2017 at 10:26 |

Oh yea, Mosin’s are rough. Mine has a minute barrel bulge that prevents the bayonet from being completely mounted (I like to think it occured at Stalingrad when some young Soviet pushed the rifle into a Wehrmact soldiers belly and pulled the trigger), but is still accurate and dependable. I’m looking into buying a few more relics to add to my collection, might grab a K98 or a SMLE next.

Not sure what the laws are in your area... but colorado (where i am) it’s legal to have a gun in your car.
After an initial cleaning, I put my mosin (taken apart) in the trunk for a few days in the hot summer and bundled up in paper towels, that absorbed all the left over cosmoline. (yeah, your’s is a mauser, but the technique should work still)

I got a heat gun, just going to take my time with it. Not in a hurry, ammo is expensive:(
